BATH, NY (WENY) -- Steuben County emergency officials are warning people about the potential fire threat of airborne paper lanterns known as Chinese lanterns, sky lanterns, fire balloons or wish lanterns.
The lanterns made of oiled rice paper on a bamboo frame, with a small candle or fuel cell that causes it to rise and float away. The lanters are considred a "recreational fire" under the New York State Fire code, but they're in violation, since they can't be constantly monitored.
Because the lanterns can travel far distances, it's impossible to keep a constant eye on them. In addition, the dry weather we've been having increases the risk of the lanterns sparking a fire when they land.
