Churches Closing in Elmira

Elmira Churches Closing

Elmira (WENY) -- Financial difficulties are pushing an Elmira Parish to sell some of its properties, including two churches.

The Christ Redeemer has three campuses, with 12 pieces of property including three churches and a middle school. Building upkeep and high insurance costs are outpacing minimal donations in this tough economy.

The Catholic Diocese recommends selling the campuses of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Charles Borromeo, listing for $345,000 and $435,000 respectively.

Parishoners and staff will relocate to St. Casimirs and money from the sales will be invested.

"The money stays local with the parish, so the money will be here," said David Quinn, Director of Finance and Administration for the Elmira Catholic Parishes. "It's strongly recommended by the diocese that we invest it as forever money, long term investments not to use it for ongoing operating expenses."

Parish leaders say there's active interest in the properties, and they met with reps from Arnot Medical today to discuss leasing some offices space.
