Kmart Demolition

Erwin (WENY) -- The demolition of the Erwin Kmart is finally underway after it sat vacant for nearly a decade. Crews have started to knock down the 92,000 square foot building to make room for a Hampton Inn.

Construction of the $9 million, 96 room hotel is expected start in the fall. The hotel is scheduled to open in spring or early summer next year.

"Well, I think after the building sat that long in the community in the Painted Post and Corning area, I think it's good to get rid of the eyesore and put in something productive," said David Deming of Painted Post.

"It's nice to see something going on," said Kevin Kodz, who owns American Twin Harley-Davidson next door. "The building being vacant wasn't good for anyone in the area. It was kind of an eyesore. So it really is nice to see some construction going on, and it's exciting to have a new business coming into town."

The hotel is expected to provide service for thousands of travelers since it's going to be located at the intersection of I-86 and future I-99.
