Steady Southern Tier Job Growth

STEUBEN CO. (WENY) -- A recent New York state comptroller report shows Elmira and Ithaca continue to lose jobs despite the state's recovery.from the recession. But local labor force experts say the numbers don't always tell the whole story.
According to the latest State Department of Labor numbers, the jobless rate among Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties fell between March and April of this year. But it remains higher than both the state and national unemployment rates.
Dan Porter is the executive director at Workforce New York, which helps people looking for work and businesses looking for workers. He says increased business at the airport and growth with the natural gas industry are adding jobs, but those numbers aren't always reflected in the reports.
"A lot of the manufacturers are very slowly, steadily adding positions back and we're seeing growth in the retail sector," says Porter. "If you drive through Horseheads and the area around the mall you can't help but see new businesses popping up. So we are seeing growth."
