Elmira (WENY) - NASCAR Fans love to see the checkered flag at WGI, but Elmira leaders are hoping to see the green flag come out more than once. Watkins glen international is Pairing with NASCAR for its Green Program. They'll donate ten trees to Elmira, every time a green Flag is waved in this Sundays race. Elmira City Mayor Sue Skidmore says the tornado took down a lot of trees, and this is a great way to get the landscape back in shape.
“Those trees are donated through NASCAR to the city or to anyone else that has faced a disaster, like community parks and schools. We're hoping to get as many trees as we can to restore some of our landscape.”
A Montour nursery will provide the trees and plant them in the city for free. If you you live in Elmira and still have trees that need to be picked up, call Elmira's Department of Public Works and put your address on the list.
