Elmira Heights (WENY) -- Local veterans are getting early Christmas gifts this year. The Bath VA Medical Center hosted its annual "Stand Down" this Thursday morning. It helped area veterans who are homeless or need a little extra help this holiday season.
Thirteen groups, from the Red Cross, to Elmira Housing Authority, to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier were there. They gave out clothes, food, legal aid even free hair cuts and flu shots at the American Legion in Elmira Heights.
"There's winter coats, gloves, sleeping bags, and the Food Bank is here handing out food because most of our guys that we work with need assistance with food," said Darlene Prutsman, Coordinator for Healthcare for Homeless Veterans.
The stand down is always the second Thursday in December.
