Mark Smith Running for Lt. Gov.
TOWANDA -- [WENY] Mark Smith is a two-term Bradford County Commissioner and says he's ready to take the big step.
He says he'll give Harrisburg perspective from a growing, rural area dealing with the changes brought on by marcellus shale drilling.
Smith says he wants to re-write the job description of Lieutenant Governor and change the way things have been going over the past few years.
A Pennsylvania native who grew up in Bradford county, he says he doesn't just want to be a placeholder... He wants to make sure voices that have otherwise been under-represented get heard.
His key points today had to deal with education, transportation, gun laws, gender equality in the workplace and of course, natural gas development.
Supporters say they think he would bring a fresh, and younger outlook to the capitol.
"Right now and in the past, it's been an office that is placeholder," said Smith. "And what we're looking to do is do something different in the office-- raise the level, raise the bar on what that office can do for Pennsylvania and make some serious progress for the people of Pennsylvania."
Some Pennsylvanians agree.
"I think its time I think we need somebody that represents the rural part of the state and also represents the concerns of many of us who live here have about protecting the environment and protecting our rural way of life," said Emily Rizzo, a Tioga County resident.
The election won't be until next year and current Republican Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley hasn't yet announced his reelection bid.
