Stamp Out Hunger

May 9, 2014

SOUTHERN TIER -- (WENY) This Saturday, May 10, don't forget to put some food on your mailbox. May 10, 2014 is the national food drive called Stamp Out Hunger. It's the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) 22nd annual event.
The way it works is you put some non perishable food that you want to donate in a plastic bag on or next to your mailbox.
     Things like,
o Canned soup
o Canned vegetables
o Pasta
o Rice
o Cereal
o Canned tuna fish
Then when the letter carrier comes they take your mail, they take the food. The food is donated to a local food pantry. The majority of donations are made during the Thanksgiving & Christmas seasons.
Local food pantries are often nearly bare by spring. As school comes to a close, children receiving school sponsored meal programs must find alternatives. Many pantries offer summer food programs to combat this issue.
It's the nations single largest single day food drive.
