Ernie Davis Celebration

ELMIRA - [WENY]     Elmira Football legend Ernie Davis would have celebrated his 74th birthday on Saturday, and the community is remembering his legacy.
Some of Davis' old friends were at the Ernie Davis Community Center this afternoon, to share memories of the Heisman Award winner. Davis was born December 14th 1939, and died on May 18th 1963 after a battle with Leukemia. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira. His friends say "The Express" was about a whole lot more than football.
Bob Hill, a friend of Ernie Davis said, "Anything he took up, he was good at.  He could have been President of the United States, that's what I think of him."
This week also marks the 52nd Anniversary of Davis becoming the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy.
