Philips Plant In Bath To Close
280 Employees To Be Laid Off
BATH, NY (WENY)---280 employees at the Philips Lighting Plant in Bath will be without a job come next year. The employees learned their fate yesterday.
Philips is an international company based in The Netherlands. The Bath facility makes high intensity discharge products and halogen components for products like lightbulbs. Those jobs are moving elsewhere.
Company officials would not confirm an official closing date but say they wanted to give employees enough time to prepare for a transition. Employees were notified during a meeting on Wednesday.
The parts made in Bath go into lightbulbs, that production will be relocated elsewhere. Company officials also say they will implement a re-training program and work with local officials to help employees look for work elsewhere.
Philips is one of several employers in the Southern Tier to announce layoffs in the past few months. Corning, Incorporated announced layoffs of dozens of hourly workers and Sikorsky will close it doors in just a few weeks.
