Gillibrand Calls for Disaster Declaration for Farmers
WASHINGTON, DC (WENY) -- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for dozens of New York counties to be declared disaster areas, after a spring freeze destroyed a lot of crops.
Gillibrand is calling on the USDA for a disaster declaration, so farmers can get federal funds to help them recoup losses that might threaten them this season. A lot of crops bloomed early - then got damaged or destroyed by late frosts. Gillibrand says across New York, more than 3-million acres of farmland experienced 30% loss or greater.
In the Southern Tier, Gillibrand wants Schuyler and Tompkins counties to be named disaster areas.
