New NY Law to Collect Old Thermostats
December 23, 2013
ALBANY, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a law requiring manufacturers of thermostats with mercury to collect their old temperature controls in an effort to keep mercury out of the environment.
The state will establish collection programs and starting in 2015, file annual reports on those collections. They hope to have over 15 thousand collected by 2015. State conservation officials are required to set goals for 2016 through 2023.
Most states prohibit selling new mercury thermostats, but an estimated 2 million are thrown out every year.
