ITHACA, NY (WENY) -- A proposed budget in Ithaca has the city's Gorge Ranger Program on the chopping block.
According to WHCU Radio, Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick's 2018 proposed plan would do away with the program.
It was originally put in place to keep people from jumping in the gorges but, the mayor says it really hasn't helped.
In August an incoming freshman at Cornell University drowned in Ithaca Falls.
Myrick says the lack of jurisdiction and authority for the rangers has also become a problem.
Right now the budget is in the proposal phase and the program is still up for debate.
