CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- Just off the rush of Black Friday shopping, consumers everywhere may be hitting the smaller stores on Saturday. That's because Small Business Saturday embraces just that--the local shops.
"It's really important to support our local businesses to keep their doors open and keep the money right in our own community," says Barbara Whitman, Director of Communication and Marketing for The Gaffer District. "It's [important] just to support them."
The annual tradition also aims to help create and sustain jobs for the Christmas shopping season.
And in Corning, it's the perfect gateway to the holidays.
"It's a great experience. It's so nice to see everyone walking around with their shopping bags and laughing," says Whitman. "We'll have Santa in Centerway as well. So you've got children who are just filled with excitement as they wait to see Santa. It's just an exciting place to be on Small Business Saturday."
The Gaffer District will be in Centerway Square as shoppers hit the streets on Saturday. There they'll host holiday music, story time for the kids and giveaways.
And it's a perfect way to welcome in the season.
"It's a great experience," says Whitman. "Come on down to the Gaffer District, say hello to us in Centerway Square and try to win some gift certificates to start your shopping."
