ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- The Chemung County Legislature held a Special Meeting Monday night regarding the 2018 proposed budget.
As WENY News has reported, for the 13th straight year, there will be no tax rate increase for county residents. The budget unanimously passed.
There were, however, some concerns surrounding possible proposals which, officials say, are regard utilizing the "Room Tax" to help pay down outstanding "payables" owed on the former Jackals hockey team.
Deputy County Executive Mike Krusen says the outstanding amount is between $350,000 and $400,000.
"The legislature, again, at a subsequent date will be asked to use Room Taxes. They have been in the past - they've used Room Taxes to pay payables for the [First] Arena and for the Jackals, so they'll be asked to do that again. At that meeting, if approval isn't granted, then what we would do is fund the Chamber [of Commerce] out of Room Taxes, as opposed to the organizational funding line' that was approved tonight," Krusen explains
As a point of clarification, nothing was approved Monday night regarding payables to the Jackals. The Chemung County 2018 proposed budget passed unanimously.
