ELIMRA, N.Y. (WENY) - Steuben County officials lent a hand at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier Tuesday.

They back backpacks for the Food Bank’s Backpack Program. It provides children who are at risk of hunger with a bag of nutritious, easy to prepare food each Friday during the school year. The program feeds thousands of children across the region each year, including nearly 1,000 in Steuben County alone.

“The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is so vitally important to no just Steuben County, but other counties in the region Whether it’s our more populated areas, like Corning or Hornell, or the rural areas, especially in Steuben County,” says Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler. “They really depend on the Food Bank of the Southern Tier for the distribution of foods and getting food to the residents that need them”

The Food Bank of the Southern served about 16,000 people each week in 2016, nearly half of which were children.
