ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking aim at Washington and emerging as a powerful critic of President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans.
The Democrat delivered a State of the State address Wednesday that was heavy on criticism of Republicans and the new tax overhaul, which rolls back a deduction for state and local taxes especially popular in high-tax states like New York.
Cuomo is considered a potential White House contender in 2020 but says he's concentrating on his current job and his bid for a third term this November.
Republican critics dismissed Cuomo's comments as political theater but political scientists say winning over liberal voters will help Cuomo in this year's governor's race. They say it will serve him well in a potential 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
