BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Families in the Southern Tier will be able to add free books to their home libraries thanks to the Barnes and Noble 2017 holiday book drive.
The recipients of the drive include "Healthy Families of Chemung & Steuben Counties" and "Family Service Society."
Representatives from the organizations were presented with the donations Friday afternoon at the store in Big Flats.
Officials with Barnes and Noble say the 9 week annual drive brought in thousands of donations, exceeding their goal.
"We surpassed our goal! We set a goal for 2,500 book and we did 2,794 books. That means our customers, out of their own pockets, spent over $14,000.00 on books to give to children who may not have books at home," says Barnes & Noble Community Business Development Manager Colleen Schrickel.
"This is a wonderful asset! We will be able to take these books out to families we work with and really promote early literacy with them," says Chrissy Harrington, Program Supervisor for Healthy Families of Steuben County.
The boxes of donated books presented on Friday only make up the past three weeks of the collection.
The books range for families with newborn babies, all the way to teen reading level.
