ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A date for the public hearing for Elmira's proposed 2018 budget has been set.
Monday night, Elmira City council voted unanimously to approve the public hearing for Tuesday, February 20th at 5:30 p.m. The hearing will take place in City Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall.
Many people in the community have voiced concerns over the proposed 17% tax increase.
During Monday's meeting, City Manager Michael Collins announced there will be an additional budget workshop this Thursday, February 8th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall, but that is not for public comment.
Council will weigh the public's input on the proposed budget on the 20th.
"I'll tell you, it's hard to find money in that budget to cut. It really and truly is. So if someone has an idea and/or a recommendation that's going to be significantly impact that 17% to a different number, I certainly am willing to entertain that," Collins says.
Collins explains after the public hearing, council will meet to discuss the input. The budget will be voted on by council during the next meeting, which will take place in March.
