Chemung River Boat Launch Shuttle Kicks off this Weekend

Posted: Updated:

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – The Chemung River is a popular spot for kayaking and canoeing, but sometimes it can be a hassle to get all of your gear down to the actual river itself.

And that's why the group Friends of the Chemung River have partnered with First Transit to offer boat launch shuttle services.

River goers will wait at one of the launch points for the shuttle to arrive at a scheduled pick up time. The boats are loaded onto the shuttle trailer and once loaded up you can get on the bus which will take you to a variety of launching spots on the Chemung River. Then you can paddle back to your vehicle from the spot where you were picked up.

District Manager of First Transit New York Jim Gorman told us, “What was lacking was transportation. The ability to get in the water at one place and exit at another place and have a vehicle to get them back to where their vehicle was.”

“In essence to get from one end to the other efficiently. There's up to 45 miles of navigable river that people could take advantage of.”

Friends of the Chemung River Executive Director Jim Pfiffer added, “It's a great partnership between us and First Transit. Paddling after all is a form of transportation, that's what they do.”

“It helps the whole community, First Transit employees, and it helps us as well. Having things to do is important and people will want to stay here for paddling. It's an attraction to help bring tourism to the area.”

The shuttle has a $20 fee, regardless of how far a passenger rides the bus. Passengers must register ahead of time and purchase the ticket online. You must bring the printed ticket to board the bus.
