Elmira, N.Y (WENY) – Friday marked national manufacturing day across the county and local manufacturing companies in the southern tier met with future innovators about the industry at Greater Southern Tier Boces.
The day is meant to showcase the importance of manufacturing and inspire the next generation of creators.
“They offer us so many job opportunities and options for career paths, and things that we would possibly want to do for our future. Said Alex, a student at GST Boces.
“Anytime my students can experience business and industry in the community it's a wonderful opportunity. There's a lot going on in our area and the more kids realize if they have a specialized skill set, their going to have a chance for a good career when they get older, it's worth it.” Said Paul Richmond, Teacher at GST Boces.
Students in the Boces program went from business to business soaking in information like the day to day functions of the manufacturing company and the variety of services and products offered.
Manufacturing companies coming to the expo they're able to see which students are really passionate about the industry.
“Directly out of a Boces program, especially one geared towards machining or manufacturing, we hire people everyday just with that level of certification or training and that's actually good for us because they have a basic understanding of manufacturing. Then we take over from there and we have internal training classes and we train people on our operations and our products and build off of what they came to us with. so the Boces programs are invaluable.” Said, Craig Perry, Director of Operations at Hardinge Group.
