Article Alleges Rep. Reed Profited From Medical Debt

Posted: Updated:

(WENY) – A recent article from the Intercept claims that Congressman Tom Reed has been profiting from collecting medical debt from bankrupt residents in New York State. The article accused Tom Reed of reaping financial rewards from the debt collection industry. It claims that Reed's firm harassed his own constituents for medical debt they never had or had already resolved.

Reed originally was the owner of the Law Office of Thomas W. Reed but since sold his ownership to his wife who runs the company now called R and R Resource Recovery. WENY News looked over Reed's financial disclosures and according to the documents, Reed no longer is involved with the company.

According to a 2014 article from the Buffalo News, Reed was assisted by the House Ethic Committee in separating himself from the business.

According to the committee, they had "no outstanding request" for information about Reed's personal finances following the 2014 allegation.

In a statement WENY News received from Reed's Communications Director, Abbey Daugherty says, "Tom is not involved in this business...This is a last minute and offensive sexist political attack on Tom's wife from a desperate candidate. We appreciate the journalistic integrity which found this claim to be false.”
