ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The oldest charity in Chemung County celebrated the kickoff to their Christmas campaign with the opening of the "big book". However, this is no ordinary book, because it contains a lot of Arctic League history.

The book has the names of donors from more than a century of generosity, relating to the Arctic League's campaign, aiming to put gifts in the hands of every kid in need across Chemung County. This year's goal is set at 120 thousand dollars. It might seem like a tall order, but officials from the non-profit are more than confident.

We spoke with board member Charlie Burke, and he told us, "I've been a volunteer for the last three Christmases distributing the bags to the families that need the help. To see the smiles and the relief that it brings is the best feeling on earth."

Volunteers ranges in age, and all walks of life, but historically the bell ringer is always a kid, and they represent the arctic league as the youth ambassador for that year's campaign during the holiday season.

This year the position is being carried out by 7th grader Ava Waters, and she added, "The feeling that you get to know that kids are going to be so happy to wake up to that Christmas present, it just brings you a feeling that you can't describe."
