WAVERLY, N.Y. (WENY) -- According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight U-S woman will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. That's why Lourdes Hospital is taking their operation on the road, hoping to make it easier for women throughout the Twin Tiers to get screened.
"We go anywhere," says Melissa Toal, Outreach Coordinator for Lourdes Hospital."We go to fairs, factories, schools, any business. We have a lot of things coming up at town halls and food pantries and churches--that kind of thing."
The hospital's Mobile Mammography Van was at Waverly High School Wednesday afternoon, giving women between the ages of 35 and 40 the opportunity to walk on, get screened and be off in just a matter of minutes.
"It takes less than fifteen minutes, so the anxiety of sitting in a waiting room, or just being able to [deal with] those busy life schedules [and to] be able to get on and get off is very easy," says Toal.
"Mammo on the move" is the second addition to the almost twenty-year mobile screening program.
The van is funded through a state grant -- serving women across the Twin Tiers and making sure everyone has the opportunity to get informed, ask questions and stay on top of their health.
You do not need to be a Lourdes patient to take advantage of the services. Your results can be sent to the provider of your choice.
If you are over 40 and it has been over one year since your last mammogram, you do not need a physician's order to receive a screening mammogram.
You can find when the van will be in your area next here.
