ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Elmira Downtown Development has been working with us on a special Saint Patrick's Day Event in Elmira. Along with officials from the non-profit, I have been heavily involved in the planning process, and I am pleased to share the big announcement!
For this year's Saint Patrick's Day, you could be a world record holder before it's even time to grab lunch. Everything is set to attempt the Guinness World Record for the largest shamrock made out of people. The kick-off event for the Irish holiday is slated to begin on the soccer fields of Eldridge Park at 10 am.
The current world record was successfully attempted by hundreds of college students in Dublin, Ireland. Hopes are high for the community to help smash that record, putting Elmira in the Guinness World Record Book.
During an interview this afternoon, Elmira Downtown Executive Director Jennifer Herrick-McGonigal said, "We want to rally the community to meet us on Sunday, March 17th, at 10am. This is before everybody goes to their respected venues, where they will take part in their St. Patrick's Day activities, to create the world's largest shamrock."
She added, "The goal is to have over 1,000 people come from 10 to 11(am). We're going to hand out green ponchos, because everybody has to be in the same color, and we have to stand in the shape for 5 minutes. So, we are asking everybody to join us in Eldridge Park on March 17th."
The record stands firm at 815 people, and without area support it will stay with Ireland. Please stick with WENY and Elmira Downtown for more information on the upcoming official Guinness World Record Event.
