WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- If you've driven through Watkins Glen lately, you know all too well about the construction and the backed up traffic. According to the Schuyler County Administrator, Tim O'Hearn, the construction is a part of an over $7 million project funded by the state.

"The project basically is a complete repaving of Franklin Street, the main street to the Village of Watkins Glen," said O'Hearn.  "As well as sidewalks and pavers around the sidewalks. Ultimately new street lighting will be a part of that later in the summer. Basically a complete face lift to the Village of Watkins Glen main thoroughfare."

In order to help the flow of traffic during busy times, O'Hearn says the final paving of the thoroughfare will take place from 8:30PM to 6:30AM.

"That's evidence of the DOT and the paving contractors willingness to try and accommodate the busy summer schedules in the Village of Watkins Glen," said O'Hearn.

Jim Guild, the owner of Famous Brands in Watkins Glen, says his business hasn't been affected one bit due to the construction.

"Believe it or not, we've actually seen an increase which I don't understand at all because there's pretty heavy traffic, construction, the parking has been a little weak, although it's really breaking up now," said Guild. "But I don't understand how we've increased in sales. The same thing happened in 1986 when they completely tore the streets out. We also increased then."

The construction is set to be finished by the end of this month.
