UPDATE (3/12/21) Elmira Police have identified the man whose body they found along Newtown Creek on Wednesday. 

Police say the man is 30-year-old Marcus Jones of Elmira. They add an autopsy was conducted Friday and no signs of trauma were found; however, the cause of death has not yet been determined. 

Additional tests are being scheduled, police say. They add this appears to be an isolated incident and there are no threats to the public. 

10:45PM UPDATE: Elmira police released more information about the body found Wednesday afternoon. According to Lt. William Solt, the report came in around 3:30 in the afternoon. When officers arrived, they found the body of a man in the area between East Avenue and the Lackawanna Trail, near Newtown Creek.

According to police, the manner of death is unknown, though the body appears to have been exposed to the elements outside for more than a day. The man's identity has been determined but not yet made public. 

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- An investigation is underway after a body was found in the City of Elmira. On Wednesday afternoon, police blocked off the area near East Avenue and Newtown Creek, near where the adult body was found.

Police say the identity of the deceased is known, but the identity is not being released at this time pending notification of the family. No further information was given. This area is near Industrial Park Avenue, which runs parallel to Interstate-86.
