UPDATE: The fire at the home on Morton Road rekindled at around 4:00 PM on April 6th. It appears the home suffered major damage from yesterday's fire.

Community Fire and Rescue units arrived to find the house with heavy fires. Crews immediately began efforts to put out the fire.

An elderly resident, that was thought to have been home, was with a friend and not in the house.

Fire departments from Chemung, Schuyler, Tompkins, and Tioga (NY) counties were all involved in putting out the fire.

No injuries or deaths have been reported. The cause is currently under investigation.

Van Etten, N.Y. (WENY)- A house fire erupted this afternoon in Van Etten on route 224 and Morton Road. Calls came in around 4:30 pm for a building in flames on Morton Rd.

When our reporter arrived at the scene a blanket of thick smoke covered route 224 leading up to Morton Raod.  Heavy intense smoke billowed out of the home, which could be seen from miles away.

Dozens of firefighters from multiple agencies, including Candor, Bressport, Odessa, and Lockwood were fighting the flames and smoke to get the fire under control.

There was also a deputy with the Chemung County Sheriff's department who closed off route 224 and redirected traffic.

We don't know if there were any injuries or if anyone was in the home at the time of the fire.

This is a developing story and we are working to get more information from fire officials.
