HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- Emergency crews worked Sunday morning to rescue the driver of a semi-truck who veered off the road and ended up in a retention pond just off of Interstate 86 in Horseheads, near the Walmart Supercenter.

The call first came in around 7:30AM for a tractor trailer in the water, at Exit 52A in Horseheads. According to Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom, a lieutenant patrolling in the area saw the back part of the trailer sticking out of the pond, smoke coming from the vehicle, and called for assistance.

The driver was still trapped in the cab of the semi, and was able to be removed with non-life threatening injuries.

As of 11AM, crews were still on scene working to remove the truck from the pond. Photos from the scene appear to show tire tracks from the semi truck leaving the exit, going through the grass, across another stretch of road from the I-86 on ramp, through the guardrail and into the pond.

Exit 52A is closed while crews work to remove the tractor trailer.
