WAVERLY, N.Y. (WENY) - Thursday afternoon, Waverly's Lily Smith signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for SUNY Delhi this fall.

Lily's coaches, family and friends all came to support her today.

Her head coach, Hailee Herc, described Lily as a "utility player" because of how versatile she is on the court. Herc said it's hard to find a setter who can also play defense.

Lily played her senior year at Waverly after transferring from Sayre the year prior, which required her to sit out for one season. Even though she only played for one year, she still felt like she was able to lead the team.

"I think as a setter one of your main jobs is to be a leader so you have to run the offense and you have to have people look up to you a little bit", said Smith. "Especially when you're a senior and you're only gonna be there for one year, you're gonna have younger girls that are gonna be taking over for you. I think that was my mindset was just, you know, do the best you can, show them, give 110% effort all the time."

The Broncos compete in the North Atlantic Conference and finished last season 5-5 in conference play. Lily spoke about why she chose SUNY Delhi and what she's most excited for competing at the next level.

"I met Coach Bracchy at a volleyball camp and I really loved his coaching style. He was really nice, definitely had some good aspects of the game and critiques to give me", said Smith. "Just improving, getting better, knowing more, improving my IQ in volleyball so I can always share it with more people. Love the game, would love to come back and coach in the area."

Lily plans to study nursing while at SUNY Delhi.

WENY Sports wishes Lily good luck as she continues her athletic career into college.
