ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Train Day at Eldridge Park returns on Saturday, May 25th for its second year. The event will celebrate the area’s railroad history.

After its successful debut last year, the event is returning with more activities for the community to enjoy. Train Day is going to be hosted by the Eldridge Park Carousel Preservation Society and the Chemung Valley Railway Society.

The CAF USA exhibit will include their Diesel Switch Engine, tours of the Erie Railroad Boxcar exhibit, operating model trains, vendors, food truck, live music, and more.

The President of the Railroad Society, Rob Piecuch, said this event is a fun way for the community to get outside, have some fun, and learn a thing or two about trains.

“The rail history is very important to the area because it really helped build Elmira in the city...in the area...into what it is now,” he said. “We like to acknowledge that, and people can have a lot of fun learning about the history and taking part in this.”

Piecuch’s grandfather, who he never knew, worked for the railroad many years ago. Piecuch said his family believes his grandfather passed his love for trains on to his grandson.

“It’s a very constructive hobby to be involved in,” he said.

Piecuch said he hopes this year’s Train Day is bigger and better than last year’s.

The event will take place from noon to 6:00 p.m. and is free to attend.
