ELMIRA, NY (WENY) - Two Elmira men are facing drug charges after a bust on Oak Street.

An Elmira police officer saw two men walking down Oak Street Sunday morning. The officer knew one of the men, Philip Whitehead, had an active warrant for his arrest. The officer stopped Whitehead, who was trying to pass a backpack to the other man. According to the Elmira police, Whitehead was being very cautious in handing the backpack over, which made the officer suspicious.

The officer took Whitehead into custody and ordered the second person to put the backpack down. The second person was also detained and told the officer of the possible presence of a one pot meth lab. More officers responded to the scene to assist, including New York State Police CCERT.

Phillip Whitehead, 38, of Elmira, was charged with 2nd degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Brent Crandall, 28, of Elmira, was charged with 2nd degree Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Elmira Police Department is asking any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact the Elmira Police Department at (607) 737-5626 or the tip line at (607) 271-HALT.
