HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) --  Law enforcement spent the evening serving the public in a little bit of a different way Thursday night.

The annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser was held at the local Red Robin restaurant in Horseheads, all to benefit the Special Olympics.

Local and state police officers help local athletes serve patrons by waiting tables, bringing soft drinks and helping to take orders.

Participating members explain how the effort is making a difference.

"We're working with the Olympians to get the message out to the public that Special Olympics is thriving and that without the support of the public it couldn't happen. It's rewarding and fulfilling to have an opportunity to work with some of the young athletes to see them thrive and be successful," says Lt. Michael Darby with the New York State Police.

The event is part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run campaign in support of Special Olympics. Funds raised will go directly to local and state Special Olympics programs.
