UPDATE: Winter Storm Warning now issued for much of Southern Tier and Finger Lakes
The Winter Storm Watch now has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning for Steuben, Chemung, Potter, Yates, Tompkins and Schuyler Counties shaded in pink from 6PM Friday Night until 4 PM Saturday evening. This is due to heavy mixed precipitation expected switching over to heavy snow throughout Saturday morning. Not only will the area be facing snow accumulation, but also expect areas of ice accumulation anywhere from one tenth to a quarter of an inch. Snowfall totals also look significant, with much of the area looking to receive 4-7" with locally higher amounts up to 10" for some. Plan on difficult travel conditions across the area, as ice/snow accumulation will cause slick roadways, especially as temperatures rapidly drop this evening.
Also, winds will be gusty out of the northwest. Gusty winds plus ice accumulation could equal several power outages and damage due to fallen trees. Winds during snow/sleet will also have the ability to reduce visibility at times and compromise vision.
Be careful if heading out to the roads tonight and tomorrow morning when the bulk of the precipitation is expected to fall. Snow will taper by the afternoon, but remaining ice and snow will still slick and slippery especially on untreated roadways.
