ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The race for Chemung County Executive is beginning to shape up. Wednesday night, current Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss officially threw his name into the hat.

Moss held a news conference at the Holiday Inn Riverview in Elmira Wednesday evening to formally announce his candidacy.

Among some of the key issues he says he will focus on if elected into office include ethics reform, public safety, and transparency within the county government.

Moss also says he will work to mend the relationship between the county and the City of Elmira, which has been facing disparities, most recently regarding the CGR report findings.

"The fact of the matter is the county and the city's relationship has been strained for a long time and I think what you have to look at, when we had a Democratic Mayor in the City of Elmira, the relationship was strained. Now, we have a Republican Mayor, and the relationship is strained. So you know what, there's a common denominator on why this relationship isn't working and I think people know what it is," Moss said during an interview following the announcement.

Another issue Moss says he plans to address includes the County's sales tax formula.

"We've got to work on the sales tax redistribution. Look, the City of Elmira knows they have a financial problem. Running all over the county and talking about it all the time isn't going to solve it. We've got to get everybody to the table, rational, calm and let's discuss some answers. The county's got to stop talking at the city and talk with the city," Moss adds.

Moss also said during the announcement he would establish live and recorded broadcasts of county meetings.

Moss was re-elected as Sheriff in 2017 and is now beginning his 4th term in that position.

So far, current Deputy County Executive Michael Krusen has announced his candidacy for the County Executive position.
