ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Just one day after the meeting to discuss unremediated toxic hazards found at Elmira High School was announced, the Department of Environmental Conservation has announced a meeting of their own.

The DEC will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, May 2, to discuss a proposed cleanup plan for the brownfield site located at Elmira High School.

If approved, the plan would green-light the excavation of about 1.6 acres of contaminated land and soil down to 14 feet below ground surface.

Waste will be hauled out by cleaned and covered trucks over main roads, but not through residential neighborhoods.

If approved, work would begin in June and be finished before school starts in September.

The meeting will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Banquet Room at the Holiday Inn Elmira-Riverview.
