A Local Food Bank Is Honoring Their Volunteers
Elmira, N.Y. (WENY) - The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is powered by generous support and hard work by volunteers across the area and the non-profit wanted to show their appreciation on Thursday.
Several people and local organizations across the Southern Tier were honored for their dedication to end hunger at the second annual, "Very Important Volunteer Awards." The event was held at the Elmira Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Every year, the food bank recognizes volunteers who have contributed seven or more hours in the previous year. This past year, forty-seven hundred volunteers gave more than fifty-one thousand hours to the Food Bank, packing more than 2 million pounds of food for people in our community.
"As the volunteer coordinator I get to see first-hand the commitment and dedication and the impact of our volunteers and being able to recognize them in a big way is really important to me. But, its also important to our community. Our volunteers are quiet literally our life-blood, we wouldn't be able to do what we do without them," said Jennifer Harris, Volunteer Coordinator at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
