CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) – Corning Community College celebrated the commencement of its
2018 class on Saturday.

Family, friends, and colleagues looked on as the graduates made their way across the stage
into their next phase of life after CCC. Among the class of 2018 were graduates from our local
area and ones from as far away as Vietnam and Mali.

There was also a good handful of military veterans who received a degree and we were able to
catch up with one of them, who was shot during his service in Iraq, and had a very special
inspiration behind getting his degree.

He left before we could get his name, which still remains unknown as of this story being posted, but he told WENY, “My mother had a lot to do with it. My mother passed away in 2014. She always wanted me to go to college, and I never made it. So, she passed away, and that's what spurred
me to come back and finish a degree.”

Thirty other veterans overall were there receiving their diplomas, along with the hundreds of others
who are now all officially college graduates.
