CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- Several local students were recognized this afternoon in Corning for their community and classroom achievements.
The thirteenth annual "Everyday Heroes Event" was a big success according to its organizers.

Over seventy students from sixteen different schools received an award with each one receiving a 50 dollar VISA gift card as well. A great amount of thought goes into each plaque received every year.

One of the organizers and First Heritage FCU Marketing Community Specialist Christy Parsons on the event said, “We honor the students based on a couple different pieces of criteria. We look for kindness to one another.”

“We look for things like community involvement and tutoring and mentoring of their fellow students. The students are selected by the staff and administration from the school, so it's a really exciting program for us.”

One lucky student drawn at random also went home with a check for one thousand dollars.
