ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – The Elmira Downtown Clean Up had to be rescheduled due to rain, but today the second attempt of the event went off without a hitch.

The rakes, brooms, gloves, and trash bags were all prepared to go on Saturday morning where Elmira residents came out to help clean up their city. People scattered throughout downtown after 9am with their supplies and put in a good morning's work.

The rain date dropped usual attendance numbers, but clean up organizers and those in attendance did not let that dampen their determination. Elmira Downtown Clean Up Co-Organizer Alison Mandel told WENY, “We traditionally do this event the Saturday before Mother's Day.”

“This year of course mother nature didn't cooperate with us, but next year mark your calendars to come out and join us as we plan to have it a week before Mother's Day again.”

“I know that this is a spring board for other Elmira Downtown Development events like the repainting and Wisner Market as well. We want the area to look presentable and clean to attract more people to the area.”

Organizers also hope for more people to pitch in for the cause in 2019.
