Police Arrest, Identify Suspects who Caused Elementary School Lockout
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – The Elmira Police Department has identified the two suspects involved in the incident which led to the lockout at Diven Elementary School Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, around 11:25 a.m., EPD responded to the area of Grand Central Venue and East Center Street for a report of a man with a handgun.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the caller who advised that two males approached him while he was in the area. One of the males reportedly pointed a handgun at him and then fled the area.
The witness said he was familiar with at least one of the suspects and provided descriptions.
Officers then established a perimeter around the area and contacted Diven Elementary School and requested the school be placed into a lockout condition as a precaution.
Officers then saw a male matching one of the descriptions in the area of Halls Lane and alerted other officers. An inner perimeter was then established around a home in the 300 block of East Center Street.
Negotiations were established and both men surrendered without incident.
A loaded handgun was located in the immediate area of the scene.
The two suspects are Jamie Drake, 19, and Jake Brooks III, 23.
They have both been charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.
The Elmira Police Department was assisted by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police.
