ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) – The Ithaca Police Department and the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office are investigating a serious car accident that occurred yesterday evening in the Town of Ithaca.

According to police, the accident happened around 7:00. Route 79 was shut down between Sheffield Road and West Haven Road for most of the night.

Ithaca Firefighters, Bangs Ambulance and the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office all responded to the accident. Firefighters worked to remove the people trapped int the vehicles.

The extrication took about 30 minutes. One person was flown by Guthrie Air to a regional trauma center with serious injuries.

Another person was transported by Bangs Ambulance to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The Ithaca Fire Police traffic crew had the road shut down until about 10:00 that evening. The Ithaca Police Department's Accident reconstruction Team was on the scene until 2:00 a.m.

The Tompkins County Sheriff and Ithaca Police are investigating the accident.
