ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- An affordable apartment community celebrated its ribbon cutting ceremony today on Maple Avenue in Elmira. The new CDS Housing Complex is specially geared towards comfortable living for seniors and those with disabilities.

The 50 units that make up the new Maple Avenue Apartments definitely aren't your ordinary affordable housing. The project has been in the works for a few years now, and those involved were very pleased to see things turn out so nicely.

The combination of housing that is both comfortable and affordable is an aspect of living that can be welcomed to the area with open arms, especially when some of those units are reserved for those with physical or intellectual disabilities through the AIM Independent Living Center.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, John Zick, the PR Director of AIM, told me, "We're actually going to have somebody here on site to provide support and services for the residents here. So whether they need to coordinate services, do applications, or just need some additional support, we'll have someone here for them. They'll talk to the residents and help them out as best they can."

After the grand opening I caught up with the CEO of CDS Life Transitions, Mark Curlettea. He said, "We wanted to do a project in the Southern Tier because we knew there was a need here. Through different connections we were able to meet with the executive director of AIM Independent Living. We knew from their reputation, that they do great work in the community on helping people live independently. That's our goal here as well."

Heading inside one of the apartments, we were able to see how the building has shaped up to be a very pleasant place to live. Each one even comes with a private patio or balcony, so residents can get out for some fresh air.
