ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Chemung County Sheriff's Office is asking drivers to please give yourself the extra time required to clean the snow and ice off of your car. With the storm raging on into tomorrow morning, many vehicles are going to be left with a heavy cover of snow once all is said and done.

When it comes to traveling anytime after the snow has ceased, it is crucial that your personal vehicle is cleared of snow and ice properly to protect yourself and other drivers on the road. Today during a brief interview Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom told me, "It can create a hazard to other drivers that are behind you."

"You could be ticketed if you have excess snow or your visibility is obstructed. You can be issued a ticket by law enforcement. Take the extra time to clear the snow off and to make sure the vehicle is properly defrosted. It's dangerous enough when you're driving in bad weather, but when your view is obstructed, it's that much more problematic."

Fines from tickets could easily exceed a few hundred dollars depending on how much negligence or reckless driving comes into play, due to not treating your vehicle properly, not to mention facing jail time if you actually cause harm to others.
