ITHACA, N.Y.(WENY) -- In the late 1980's, the Ithaca Gun Company closed its doors due to bankruptcy. Today, the former Gun Hill Factory site is going to get cleaned up and re-purposed. A local contractor is hoping to turn the site into age-restricted apartments. The site is a difficult location due to the proximity of the gorges located near it. Before any demolition and new construction begins, the land has to be cleaned up and approved for development through the DEC.

"I think it takes an environmental liability and turns it into a community asset and I think that this is something that a long time coming. There's been extensive remedial effort to get the site cleaned up over the last two decades and that will be a nice culmination of all of that work to have this beautiful new building," says Frost Travis, President of Travis Hyde Properties

Once the land is officially cleaned up, the developer says they hope to have the project started by the end of this summer. Once started, they hope to be able to project prices of the apartments and more details for the public.
