Johnson City police investigating 'suspicious death' of 11-year-old child
JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) -- The Johnson City Police Department on Monday said it's investigating the death of a child in the village.
According to police, the 11-year-old child passed away Saturday at multi-family home at an undisclosed address.
Johnson City Police Chief Brent Dodge says police received the phone call around 2:30 p.m. Saturday from someone "within the residence."
Police say they are investigating it as "suspicious death," as the exact cause of death has not yet been determined.
Chief Dodge says the child's autopsy was performed on Sunday and that New York State Police and the Broome County District Attorney's Office are involved in the investigation. Chief Dodge did not confirm if the death is a crime and says no arrests have been made.
The child's identity has not been released, but the Johnson City School District released the following statement:
"The Johnson City School District was saddened to learn of the death of one of their 5thgrade students over the weekend. Counselors and other supports were immediately put into place today and will remain throughout the week to be available to our students and staff."
