Painted Post man charged with over 1,000 counts of falsifying business records
PAINTED POST, N.Y. (WENY) – A Painted Post man is behind bars after police say he was charged with over one thousand counts of Falsifying Business Records.
New York State Police say 37-year-old Joseph Canner was arrested after being indicted by a Steuben County Grand Jury for Grand Larceny in the Second Degree and 1,042 counts of Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree.
Troopers say from 2013 to 2018, while an employee at the former Sitel business in Painted Post, Canner stole over $100,000 through the sale of illegally marketed Wall Street Journal newspaper subscriptions on his personal eBay account.
Troopers say the theft cost Dow Jones, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, over $200,000 to produce, transport, deliver and service the stolen subscriptions. It also reportedly resulted in more than $500,000 in lost revenue.
Canner was sent to the Steuben County Jail without bail.
