Cornell University recognizes Horseheads native for community contributions
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Dr. Barbara Mix was awarded the New York State Hometown Alumni Award from Cornell University on Wednesday night. This award is given out to those who attend Cornell and then take their talents back home with them to make a contribution to their town.
Dr. Mix was born and raised in Horseheads, where she says her love of animals grew. She told WENY News that her mother recalls her saying at just five-years-old that she was going to be a veterinarian, and never changed her mind over the years. Dr.Mix attended Penn State University for her undergraduate studies, and then went on to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. From that point, she worked in Canandaigua for a period of time until returning home to Horseheads in 2001 to strictly work on large animals.
"I really like working with the animals yes, I love them, but you have to do more than love them, you've gotta like the people too and the clients are the people that have them. So that's why I do it. I get to work with people and I get to work with critters," said Dr. Mix.
According to Cornell University, Dr. Mix is only the 5th person to receive this award.
