ELMIRA, N.Y.(WENY)--This year St.Patrick's Day falls on a Sunday, which means some celebrations are going to be happening a day before the actual holiday. Local law enforcement realized that Saturday is going to be a heavy partying day, so they are taking extra precaution to make sure that safety is a major priority this weekend. The Chemung County Sheriffs is teaming up with local law enforcement to ensure that the public is kept safe this weekend by enforcing Stop DWI.

"I think you're going to see a mix between checkpoints and just roving patrols. So primarily what you're going to see is a lot more law enforcement vehicles out and about, and they're going to be stopping people for a variety of violations to ensure that they're not under the influence," says William Schrom, Acting Cheung County Sheriff.

Local department across the county, including State Police, the Elmira Police Department, the Village of Horseheads, West Elmira, Elmira Heights, and Steuben County Sheriffs will be participating in Stop DWI this weekend. The initiative will start on Friday, March 15th until Monday, March 18th. Officials ask those participating festivities this weekend to have a plan to get home and not drive under the influence.
