Two Ithaca Police officers credited with saving suicidal woman's life
ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) – Two Ithaca Police officers are being credited with saving a suicidal woman on Thursday night.
Police say just before 6:30, officers were dispatched to the Cayuga Street parking garage for a report of a woman hanging over the railing of the top level.
Officers Hubbell and Byrd were reportedly the first on scene. IPD says they sprinted to the top via the stares and found the woman handing backwards, headfirst and appearing to be struggling to hang on.
The two officers rushed over to her and pulled her back up over the railing.
Police say it was determined the woman was distraught over a family issue and was emotionally unstable as a result.
She was transported to a nearby hospital to undergo care.
In regards to the incident, Ithaca Police Chief Pete Tyler said, “I commend Officer Hubbell and Officer Byrd for their heroic efforts. Both officers demonstrated quick thinking, courage, and teamwork in a very stressful and dangerous situation, ultimately saving this girl’s life. Congratulations to both officers on a job well done and representing the Ithaca Police Department at the highest level”.
